London, the first thing that would probably come to your mind is how culturally active this city is. This is perhaps the result of the enriching history that the city is acclaimed for. Throughout the years the way entertainment has been treated in the city has radically changed. From the traditional to the more unconventional the city has seen it all with respect to entertainment and related activities.
Presently art is at its zenith in the city of London. The proliferation of modern ideas and concepts has made the art scene grow by leaps and bounds. If tradition is what beckons you then the National Gallery and the Tate Britain are the right places for you to go to. A collection of more than 2, 300 paintings make this gallery famous that stores works from the mid- 13th century to 1900. Tate Britain houses British art from 1500 to the present day and the modern artists featured includes David Hockney, Francis Bacon and Peter Blake.
But if it is modern art you are looking for there is no better place than the ICA Bar and Café. This is the hub of a wide range of activities from art exhibitions, talks to films and theatrical productions. The bar here is a cool place to hang out in and those genuinely interested can also browse through the bookshop. Besides the ICA Bar and Café, modern art is next best featured at Tate Modern that offers a variety of interesting works. Admission is free here but a donation is always welcome
You could also immerse yourself in the world of cinema when in London. This kind of entertainment is centered in Leicester Square where most of the theatres play mainstream cinema. If an “art house” experience is what you desire then the Gate Cinema and the National Film Theatre could be your calling. Throughout the year various film festivals are played here.
Apart from the aspects mentioned above, comedy and dance, too, find a great deal of importance in the city. The Comedy Store is perhaps the most famous comedy club and wins hands down where comedy shows are considered. Dance performances are mostly centered on Sadler’s Wells theatre and other excellent productions are also showcased at the Royal Festival Hall.
The music scene in London is truly classy, diverse and international. If classical music has good demand in the city so do rock, pop and jazz. The Barbican Center, the South Bank Center, the South Bank Center and the Royal Albert Hall are the three main homes of classical music in the city. The other three music varieties of pop, rock and jazz can be found at the Brixton Academy while jazz is perhaps best played at Ronnie Scott’s.
Apart from music, theatre is another area that the city excels in. While there are four repertory companies namely the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal National Theatre, the Royal Court Theatre and Shakespeare’s Globe where the more sophisticated shows are hosted, there are the “West End” shows that refer to the big productions.
So if there is music in London, there are theatre and movies too and when it comes to entertaining yourself your cup is more than full!
